THE YARE AND BURE ONE DESIGN CLASS
MINUTES OF CLASS AGM NOVEMBER 11TH 2009 held at the GREEN MAN PH, RACKHEATH, at 7.00pm
1. Apologies for absence:
The Class Secretary had been informed of 26 apologies.
2. Minutes of Meeting held October 22nd, 2008:
These were agreed and signed as a true record.
3. Matters Arising:
None.
4. Captain's Report:
The Captain's written report had been circulated with the papers for the AGM and is reproduced below. At the meeting he welcomed the new owners present. The Class was in a good position with three new GRP boats on order and two rebuilds, YBODs 5 and 3. There were also several people seeking to join the Class but at present there was a lack of second hand boats for sale. The Nancy Oldfield Trust had asked if anyone would be willing to donate a set of sails to them as their existing set were well past their best.
He concluded by expressing his thanks to those leaving the Committee for all their work and commitment to the Class. These were: Fiona Elliot, James Macdonald, Derek Jennings, Peter Hawes and Liz Chettleburgh.
‘Normal service has been resumed' - As anticipated this year has been a bit quieter than last and settled into the more usual flow of regattas, open events and social gatherings, though anyone attempting to make all the events would find it difficult to find many ‘quiet' weekends.
I tried to sail at least once at all the major White Boat venues and enjoyed the variety of sailing and hospitality. It is as well that the Class Captain does not necessarily have to be a leading sailor to qualify for the post!
The Class supper held in July was, I hope, enjoyed by the elite few who attended and were entertained by Nigel ‘Boy' Syer. There is a lot going on at that time of year and it may be better to move the event back to May to make it more popular. If anyone has any suggestions, please feed-back information through any of the Class Committee.
During the year we have seen the relaunching of a rebuilt Lyceana (5) and currently Purple Emperor (3) is undergoing a rebuild, also at the Phoenix Boatyard. It is very heartening that there are people who are prepared to go to such lengths to resurrect boats, which would otherwise disappear from the fleet. Of the 129 boats built (13 was not built) four have been lost in fires and five are in the ‘hire fleet' or otherwise out of private hands, leaving 120 potentially available to race. Admittedly it would be a nightmare if they all turned up on the same start line, though I am aware that NBYC does like a ‘crowded' start!
During the year there have been one or two tentative enquiries about building new boats from the Class moulds. Hopefully these will come to fruition eventually. Meanwhile your Committee has met on three occasions to drink coffee and eat biscuits while contemplating the finer points of this beautiful boat! Currently the original Earnest Woods templates/patterns are being copied so that they can be stored away safely, as we felt that they were too valuable to be used. The Class is indebted to Martin Broom who has been storing them on our behalf and releasing them as and when required. Andrew Wolstenholme is also preparing detailed accurate drawings in 3D, which will give us definitive measurements, and positions for all parts of the hull and rig. This exercise has raised one or two small issues, for example where the storm jib should be positioned on the bowsprit. We have also been fortunate that Colin Facey has kindly been storing the new moulds for us but in the meantime the Committee has been looking into the future long-term safe storage of all these items.
Finally, the Class does not run by itself and I would like to thank all the Committee and Scrutineers for their input to making the Class ‘tick', particularly David Talbot for looking after the accounts and most importantly Heather Evans who inevitably shoulders most of the work, as most Secretaries do."
Simon Daniels
Before the next item was taken Malcolm Kemp asked for a show of hands in support of a proposal to trial a change of format for the annual Class event, which has traditionally been a formal dinner, held at the early part of the season. The Committee wished to try an informal event coupled with the 2010 AGM. The meeting unanimously agreed that this be tried.

David Talbot presented the accounts and ran through the main points. 2009 had been a much quieter year with less activity. The charity donations outstanding from the Centenary had been made during this financial year so showed in the figures. The accounts were passed Nem Con.
6. Elections:
The following were voted in by the meeting Nem Con:
Captain: Simon Daniels
Secretary: Heather Evans
Committee: David Talbot, Malcolm Kemp, Chris Jeckells, Colin Facey, Phil Ollier, Geoff Evans
Scrutineers: Patrick Richardson, Maynard Watson
Sail Measurer: James MacDonald
Sailmaker: Jeckells
7. A.O.B.:
- The Secretary reminded Owners to inform her of boat changes, such as change of owners or major work being undertaken, and changes of address, both postal and e mail. If any boats are for sale please pass this information on too as the Secretary has a list of potential buyers seeking to join the Class. For those people who are closely associated with the Class but are not owners if they contact the Secretary she will add them to the e mail data base so that they can receive newsletters etc.
- The Class Committee had commissioned Andy Wolstenholme to produce a set of definitive drawings with measurements and off sets marked on them and these were on view at the meeting. These were necessary as there were no such drawings in the Class archives. Maynard Watson had been closely involved in this project and the Class are indebted to him for his diligence.
- The Class had also commissioned working copies of the original Ernest Woods patterns, which are stored for the Class by kind permission of Martin Broom. These copies were almost complete and are in the process of being scrutineered by Maynard Watson, after which only these will be used and as the originals are in a delicate state and must be preserved. The Captain thanked both Maynard and Colin Facey for their work on this project.
- An arrangement had been entered into with NBYC to rent a purpose built storage unit in which to house the GRP moulds, patterns, frames and the Class archives. Unfortunately, due to the current financial climate, NBYC has had to defer the building of this unit but has offered the Class permission to place a container unit on their site. Discussions around this are ongoing.
- Mike Evans asked the Committee to give consideration to reviewing the "weight issue" as it was his view that, with rebuilds and other major work being undertaken on wooden boats, some parameters should be set. He asked the meeting to consider the past work that had taken place to ensure that the new GRP boats were constructed to a given weight and that each boat is weighed at points in construction to ensure that they have no advantage over existing boats. He felt that there was potential for future problems if the Class did not address this Issue with some degree of urgency. This seemed to find favour with most those present at the meeting. The Secretary pointed out that in 2006 the Committee had agreed that existing boats should be weighed following substantial work. The Captain agreed to ensure that the Committee revisited this issue early in the season.
- The Captain thanked Derek Jennings and his staff for once again hosting the AGM.
The meeting closed at 2015 hours.
